Acts of Hope
Acts of Hope are a way for you to connect more directly with people living in a local long-term care or retirement home. The ideas below are a bit more personal and have the benefit of being done at a time that works best for your schedule. Whether you are an individual, a family, a classroom, a youth group, or a whole school, Acts of Hope can be adapted and help you make a connection in your local community.
How it Works
Decide what Act of Hope you are interested in doing
Fill out the sign-up form with details on what you’ll be doing and when
Halton Alive will contact you with details about your local home
Halton Alive will contact the home to let them know what to expect
Have fun working on your project and use the Discussion Starters below to take this opportunity to have a discussion about how and why we value the elderly
Send Halton Alive confirmation (maybe even a picture!) that your Act of Hope is complete
Sidewalk chalking is a great way to bring visual hope and encouragement to residents and workers or delivery people. And all you need is chalk! This is a great activity for one person or a whole group! Get your friends, club, family, neighbours, or church involved!
Write letters or cards to the elderly! Everyone loves getting friendly mail and you might get a letter back or even a pen pal. There are many elderly who do not have family to visit or talk to so your “get to know you” letter could be just the smile they need.

With the limitations on visitation maybe you want to do a video chat or record a fun video for the elderly. You could get extra creative and perform a dance or short play or showcase your favourite activity that can be played for all the residents of a home.
Use your unique skills and ideas to bring hope and encouragement. It could be making a mural, knitting, artwork, window visits, phone calls, decorate a pot and grow some flowers in it, or anything else your imagination comes up with!
